Schapen Collection

Together as a family, Schapen was created by two sisters, the one a farmer of Merino sheep and the other a pediatric Occupational therapist. They set out on a journey of discovery and education to understand the remarkable, yet underrated, value of Merino wool and its application. Their vision was not only to create a thriving business to support their families but to make sure all their decisions benefited the local community.

Helderstroom Alpacas

We began our alpaca journey in 2004 with five pregnant alpacas imported from South America. Our camelid knowledge then was zero! We now specialise in the hand knitting and hand weaving of pure alpaca fibre processed by us and handspun from our own small herd of alpacas in the Little Karoo. We utilise the 22 natural colours and shades of alpaca as well and we also dye. Alpaca represents one of the finest animal fibres on the planet and in the making our products we create employment and support the local community.

Adele Mohair

Adéle’s Mohair is a labour-intensive cottage industry, producing designer knitting yarns, accessories and home textiles. Adéle started the business in 1983 and continues to run it adhering to fair trade and green standards. The luxurious natural fibres of mohair (from Angora goats) and Merino wool (from sheep) are locally sourced and of the finest quality. The current trend of recycle and reuse has created opportunities for innovative and contemporary design of new products.

The workshop is located in the rural areas between the port cities of East London and Port Elizabeth of South Africa.
